porchlit: the machine stops
My friend Yonnas helped start a project called Porchlit, a space-based arts/history project where everyday people read aloud in public places.
On 12th Ave S & S King St, I read an excerpt from The Machine Stops, by E.M. Forster, written in 1909. It’s an incredibly prophetic short story, and I marvel at Forster’s ability to imagine a future where society is completely mediated by technology, imagining internet telecommunications and our need for direct human interaction when the telephone was in only 8% of homes, before the invention of the resistor nearly 40 years later.
